One of our community members recently shared an experience that perfectly highlights both the risks and protections that come with modern technology.

While traveling on a plane, she received a sudden notification from Apple:

“An AirTag has been detected moving with you.”

For a moment, panic set in. Was someone trying to track her? Was the AirTag slipped into her bag or coat pocket without her knowing? She took screenshots and a screen recording, just in case.

A few minutes later, as she walked farther away, the alert disappeared. The AirTag wasn’t hers — it had simply been near her in someone else’s luggage. Still, the experience was unnerving. It was a powerful reminder of how small devices can impact our sense of safety, especially for women traveling alone.

What Exactly Are AirTags?

Apple’s AirTags are coin-sized Bluetooth trackers designed to help people locate lost items like keys, wallets, or luggage. They connect through Apple’s Find My network, which uses millions of iPhones worldwide to locate a tagged item.

While the convenience is undeniable, the risk is just as real: the same technology that helps someone find their bag can also be misused by others to secretly track people.

How Apple Tries to Protect You

Apple is aware of the potential for misuse and has built in some safety features:

  • Proactive alerts: iPhones notify you if an AirTag that doesn’t belong to you appears to be moving with you.
  • Sound alerts: You can trigger the AirTag to play a sound so you can locate it.
  • Cross-platform safety: Apple has released an app for Android users to scan for unknown AirTags.

These protections aren’t perfect — some notifications can be delayed, and false alarms (like our member experienced on her flight) do happen. But the fact that the alert exists at all is a critical safeguard.

What To Do If You Get an AirTag Alert

If you ever receive this notification, treat it seriously:

  1. Don’t ignore it. Even if it turns out to be harmless, better safe than sorry.
  2. Use your phone to make the AirTag emit a sound. This can help you locate it.
  3. Check your belongings. Look inside bags, jackets, or under/inside personal items.
  4. Disable the AirTag. If you find it and it doesn’t belong to you, twist open the back and remove the battery.
  5. Contact law enforcement. If you believe you’re being stalked or harassed, Apple can provide the registered owner’s information through proper legal channels.

The Onyx Perspective

Technology isn’t the enemy — but how it’s used (or misused) matters. AirTags are a perfect example: helpful when used as intended, dangerous when weaponized against someone’s privacy.

The most important takeaway? Awareness. By staying informed about how these tools work, you gain the power to act quickly and confidently if something feels off.

Final Thoughts
